What's Happening

Movie Night

popcorn

Movie Night is March 20, the third Saturday of the month.  We are bringing an old classic, Marjorie Morningstar, starring Gene Kelly and Natalie Wood to you for Passover.   Run time is 125 minutes.  In 1957, this was a romantic drama.  Today, it may seem like a comedy with its trite script.  But everyone seems to agree that Gene Kelly gave an outstanding performance as did some other big names of the day you may remember like Ed Wynn, Carolyn Jones and Martin Milner.

Fresh from high school, Jewish-American princess, Marjorie (Natalie Wood) has a bright future ahead. Her upper-class parents hope she'll choose college and a prosperous husband, but spending the summer as a camp counselor leads her down a different path. Even though Broadway success Wally (Martin Milner) wants to woo Marjorie, the man of her dreams turns out to be Noel (Gene Kelly), a small-time, carefree composer working for a summer-stock theater company across the lake.  Watch for an awkward Passover Seder scene with Noel as Marjorie’s date and first introduction to her parents.  We’ll either cry or laugh.

Come join us at 7:00 p.m. for this fifty year old classic.  Movie rolls at 7:30 pm.  Admission is free.  All we ask is that you stick around after the movie to help us clean up the place.  Feel free to bring friends and a snack to share.  Movie Night is an Adult Event.  See you at the movies.

Spatula drawingDiva Dinner

"Bona Sabato"
That’s Good Shabbos in Italian. The cuisine of the Italian Jews is quite interesting and delicious.

The dinner divas invite you to join us for "Shabbat In Italy” on Friday, March 12.  We will start the evening off with "Stroncatelli in Brodo" -- what else but chicken soup with pasta and swiss chard.  Next, we will have "Pollo Pommadoro” -- roast chicken with sage, olives, artichokes and garlic in a tomato - red wine sauce.  To accompany the chicken we will serve “Riso del Sabato" -- saffron scented risotto.  There will be delicious vegetarian options as well.  If you have any questions, contact Elwin.  We hope you can join us for this twist on the traditional Shabbat dinner.

We know you won’t want to miss this extraordinary treat, so make sure your reservations and payment are received in the shul office by Thursday, March 4.  The cost is $10 for each adult and $6 for each child, 12 years and younger. The reservation form is in the Schrier or can be downloaded here.

Brotherhood Invitation

I would like to extend an invitation to all of the men of CST to participate with the Brotherhood of Temple Kol Ami and the Men of Reform Judaism (MRJ) on the weekend of March 5 & 6th in Friday night Shabbat services, and a leadership discussion followed by Havdalah services on Saturday afternoon.

John Shalett, from New Orleans, LA, will be visiting with us that weekend.  John is the current President of MRJ, is a (semi) retired social worker and therapist, and very involved in issues concerning Jewish men. We will be discussing Brotherhood development, leadership, and reasons that Jewish men are not as active in congregational life as they used to be.

There will be a wine and cheese reception following the discussion and Rabbi Roman will lead Havdalah services.  It would be wonderful to have some CST men there!

Isaac Mayer Wise Shabbat Service and Passover Pot-Luck Dinner
Friday, April 2 at Congregation Shir Tikvah

Members of Detroit-area Reform congregations will come together as a community at Congregation Shir Tikvah on Friday, April 2, for the annual Isaac Mayer Wise Shabbat. In keeping with the community spirit of the evening, the 7:45 p.m. service will be preceded by a Passover Pot-luck Dinner at 6:30 p.m.

The Metropolitan Detroit Federation of Reform Synagogues (MetFed) will provide Kosher-for-Passover chicken and beverages, and those attending will be responsible for bringing a Passover non-dairy side dish in a disposable container.  There is no charge for the meal.  See the Schrier for reservation details.

Each year, MetFed sponsors a community service on the Friday during Passover.  Hosting privileges have rotated among the area Reform congregations.

This event started in 1967, when the Metropolitan Detroit Federation of Reform Synagogues was founded to promote the advancement of Reform Judaism and to foster community togetherness and intercongregational harmony.
