A Very Special Movie Night for October

We will be showing a double feature of New York Yiddish Theatre and an old Yiddish movie from 1939. But wait, there is more! Our chef-in-residence, Elwin will be making some delicious Yiddish (traditional Eastern European) treats, noshes and snacks. It should be a special night of Yiddish fun. High Holiday Ticket Policy
While Shabbat services are open to one and all, during the High Holy Days when we are reaching seating capacity our first obligation is to our members. We are able to offer the programs and services we do because of the dues members pay. However, as we have grown, and continue to grow, seating becomes limited at evening and morning services.
We recognize members place a high priority on 1) keeping High Holy Day services in our building rather than off-site and 2) maintaining the traditional content of each service. We could not do this if we switch to split services and have to reduce contents in each. Therefore, in order to guarantee our members a place to pray on the High Holy Days, it is necessary to ask for tickets. Hence, we will continue checking tickets for Erev Rosh Hashanah, Rosh Hashanah morning, Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur morning.
Therefore the following is Shir Tikvah’s High Holy Day ticket policy.
- Tickets will be sent to all families in good standing for each adult member and for children 8-24 years old.
- Any young adult, 25 and over who wants to attend the High Holy Day services, must join the congregation. They can join at the under- 30 dues level.
- Tickets can be obtained from the office for any family member visiting from out of town.
- Tickets are non-transferable.
- Non-ticket holders can attend all family services and arrive on Yom Kippur after 12:30 p.m. and stay the rest of the day.
High Holiday Babysitting
Babysitting will be provided during all services for the High Holy Days except during family service. Children, seven and under, are welcome. Reservation forms will be mailed with the tickets. Your children will enjoy supervised play, crafts, snacks and fun!
If your children require diaper changes, bottles, or both make sure to bring all necessary supplies, labeled with their name and instructions. Bottles must be filled and ready to use.
We provide snacks but recommend that you send a bagged lunch for morning services since many children are hungry before services are over.
Parents will be required to sign their children in and out and must designate on a seating chart where, in the sanctuary, they will be sitting.
Reservations will only be taken in writing or by e-mail. Please do not leave reservations in phone messages.
Tashlich Potluck Lunch
Once again, we will have a potluck lunch following Tashlich services at Jaycee Park in Troy, off of Long Lake between Rochester Road and John R. As we have done for the past few years, we will be grilling hot dogs. Everyone else is responsible for side dishes and desserts.
We’d like to know how many hot dogs to purchase. We won’t tell you what to bring, but we are asking that you let us know how many hot dogs you think your family will want. See the form in the Schrier or here.Yom Kippur Food Drive 2010
Congregation Shir Tikvah will be joining over twenty-five other Metro Detroit organizations and synagogues in Yad Ezra's annual Yom Kippur Food Drive. Members of local congregations are asked to take a grocery bag or donation envelope home on Rosh Hashanah and return it filled either with food or money, respectively, to services on Yom Kippur.
YAD EZRA PREFERRED FOOD LIST
Canned fruit & vegetables, tuna, pasta products, peanut butter, canned gefilte fish, rice, matzah, oatmeal, coffee, sugar, tea bags, and tubes of soup mix.
Break The Fast With Your Shir Tikvah Family
Please join us on Saturday, September 18th immediately following closing services and Havdalah to Break-the-Fast. Break the Fast is a coordinated dairy potluck meal for the entire family. If you would like to attend, please complete the form in the Schrier or here and return it to the temple office not later than Monday, September 13th. We must have an accurate number to plan for bagels and seating.
It is easiest when dishes come in disposable dishes/pans and ready to go. If, however, you do need to have something heated, the ovens will be on for you. Please do not bring your item in with instructions as there won’t be anyone in the kitchen to prepare it.
Cancer Support Group
I would like to see if there is interest in starting a cancer support group. Open to men and women. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and had surgery in April. If you have been touched by cancer and need to talk to others who understand, please call me. Group would meet either Sunday afternoons or Thursday evenings beginning in October. If interested, please call me, Matthew Klar.
Diva Dinner
IT’S SIMCHAT TORAH
IT’S CONSECRATION
IT’S A PASTA BAR
Friday, October 1, 2010
5:30 p.m.
Simchat Torah services will be earlier than in the past, and we know that trying to get dinner scheduled at home may be difficult. So—your Dinner Committee has scheduled a family-friendly, “All You Care to Eat” Pasta Bar with a variety of sauces (meat, veggie, marinara and maybe more) at 5:30p.m. that evening, and it’s all for the low, low price of $5 per person including salad and garlic bread, too. How can you beat that?
In addition to being one of the most moving services of the year, Simchat Torah is traditionally the time when we here at Shir Tikvah celebrate the young people in our congregation who are just beginning their formal Jewish education with our special Consecration service starting at 6:30 p.m..
Please return the reservation form (from the Schrier or here) to the shul office with payment by Friday, September 24.
Fourth Annual CST Sukkah Schlep
Join us on Saturday evening, September 25, 2010 when we will leave shul at 7:00 p.m. and travel by bus, to visit two of our member’s sukkahs. The evening starts with singing holiday songs on the bus as we proceed to sukkah #1 for dinner and music. We will re-board the bus for more singing and finish the evening with Havdalah and dessert at sukkah #2. There will be plenty of time at each sukkah to schmooze/visit with friends and “bench lulav" -- recite the ritual blessings over the lulav and etrog before returning to CST. Cost for the night is $15.00. Contact Elwin Greenwald for details.
