Empty Bowls

Sunday, April 14, 2024 6 Nisan 5784

12:00 PM - 1:00 PM

Please join The Soup Troupe, Membership Committee, and the Tikkun Olam Committee on April 14th, as we continue Shir Tikvah’s long Empty Bowls tradition. The global Empty Bowls movement began in 1990 when a teacher at Lahser High School wanted his students to participate in a local food drive. The students crafted bowls and invited faculty to a lunch where they talked about food insecurity. The attendees left with their empty bowls as a reminder that many people in the world cannot fill their bowls. From that small act, Empty Bowls has turned into an international movement that has raised millions of dollars for local food charities. Shir Tikvah’s Empty Bowl tradition was started by our beloved congregant, Michael Phillips, of blessed memory. Each year, Michael spent hours helping members create and glaze ceramic bowls for the event. Sadly, when Michael died it was a difficult tradition to continue, but now it’s back! Throughout March, congregants got a chance to decorate bowls for the April 14th event. All proceeds will go to Yad Ezra and our own Soup Troupe. Don’t miss out on this mitzvah opportunity! The day will include a presentation about food insecurity from Repair the World at 10am. At about noon, we’ll gather for a potluck meal of soup, salad, bread, and cookies. The minimum donation for the event is $5 per person and we ask those who are able to contribute a soup, salad, cookie, or bread to share. In return, attendees will be able to take home one of the unique bowls that has been created by themselves or a fellow congregant and with the satisfaction that comes from learning, community and Tikkun Olam.
